What motivated me to become a therapist: When I was younger, I knew I wanted to be in a helping profession. At first it was wanting to be a doctor or nurse or even a CSI agent - however my own challenges in comprehending math and science took me off of that path. As I progressed through school, I began to explore my passion for social justice and wanting to effect change in a small way that allowed for holistic support of their lives and to allow individuals to feel empowered to make the change that is good for them.
What do you value most in a client: I value client’s willingness to come in at a place of not knowing and being “scatterbrained” or having a “ping-pong brain” (basically feeling like their thoughts aren’t in a cohesive order). To me, that shows a client’s vulnerability showing and willingness to be uncertain but hopeful within the process.
What would you like a client to say about working with you? “This is still hard but I feel like I have a course of action to manage this.” “I feel a little more found.”
Our environments - current, historical, and structural - shape who we are and the stories we tell ourselves. Challenging relationships, unsupported environments, along with life transitions and stressors can impact your sense of self, how you view the world, and the path you walk. To those around us, this may present as anxiety, low mood, lack of motivation, anger/irritability, isolation from people and activities of interest. Within ourselves, this may present as feelings of stress, shame, guilt, and resentment towards the stories that make up our life thus far.
As an individual with lived experience with ADHD, I strive for an environment that is collaborative and allows you to work at your own pace and space. My relationship first practice pulls from AEDP (level 1), acceptance and commitment therapy, and internal family systems that work toward building a greater understanding of the self and finding a way forward. Through noticing, exploring, and learning about the stories that have created your life story thus far, it sets the stage to shift the narrative and build a story that aligns with your values, ignites hope, and empowers yourself to enact the change that is in alignment with who you are at your core.
